This hand-made, original woodblock print depicts the complicated relationship between body and lived reality. The rider's vacant, outlined space is surrounded by a wealth of color and nature as they traverse detailed natural scenery atop their golden horse; connected to the beauty around them, but not to themselves. Overhead, a gritty, calloused hand in stark shadow looms; perhaps to pluck them from space, to mold and reshape them, or simply to threaten.
The image was constructed with the experience of gender dysphoria and body dysmorphia in mind, but themes of creations, depersonalization, and connection to nature may resonate with a number of experiences.
This reductive print was printed in four layers, each one carved from the same block of wood. Layers were carved, printed, then carved from the previous layer and printed over the last, so that each layer of color builds upon the rest. The reductive nature of the print means that this piece cannot be recreated; the individual layers have been carved away, and it is one-of-a-kind.
