For Nothing in the World - Joan of Arc
$45.00

“For nothing in the world,” she declared, “will I swear not to arm myself and put on a man’s dress.” - Quote from Joan of Arc (Transgender Warriors by Leslie Feinburg)

This hand-made, original intaglio print depicts the famous Joan of Arc, as derived from John Everett Milais' "Joan of Arc" (1865), with the likeness of a transgender man. The hand of God from Michaelangelo's "The Creation of Adam" (1512) reaches down to Joan from above, holding tension with her eyeline as she gazes steadily upwards at Him. Behind her, Adam's hand reflects internal longing and sureness.

Joan of Arc chose to die rather than give up her gender non-conforming expression, a fact that many today fail to mention. While we cannot know how she would have identified in modern times, her story resonates with transgender men and masculine nonbinary people. To many, she represents the first transgender man.

The design was etched into a copper plate using acid, each line's depth and resulting darkness calculated into the time it was allowed to etch and when in the process it was carved. The printing process for this method is more involved and complex than most, and the resulting work a stunningly detailed piece of original art.
